Finding the Perfect Words: Why Wedding Readings Matter

(And Where to Find Ones That Feel Like You)

When you picture your wedding ceremony, you probably imagine the moment you first see each other, the vows you’ll exchange, and maybe a few happy tears from the people you love most. But what about the words that frame those moments?

One of the simplest ways to make your ceremony feel personal and memorable is by including a meaningful reading. It’s a chance to pause, breathe, and be reminded — in poetry, prose, or everyday language — what love really means to you.

As a Humanist celebrant, I often work with couples who want their ceremony to feel warm and genuine, but not overly formal or religious. The right reading can do just that: add depth, invite a smile or a tear, and remind everyone why they’re there.

Why Include a Reading?

  • It sets the tone. A thoughtful reading can make your ceremony feel hopeful, joyful, or quietly reflective — whatever feels right for you.

  • It involves loved ones. Many couples ask a friend or family member to do the reading, giving them a special moment in your day.

  • It reflects your values. Whether you love modern memoirs, classic poetry, or simple wisdom about what it means to love and be loved, the words you choose can echo what you believe.

Where to Find the Right Words

Pinterest boards and internet lists can be overwhelming, which is why I’ve gathered some of my favourite Humanist-friendly wedding readings all in one place. From timeless writers like Kahlil Gibran to contemporary voices like Dolly Alderton, these words are thoughtful, inclusive, and adaptable to your own style.

You can read them aloud as they are, pick just a line or two for inspiration, or use them as a starting point for writing your own vows.
